A field guide to our four natural colours

A field guide to our four natural colours

Madder, walnut, logwood and the cotton left undyed — meet the palette behind every Noticed piece.

Noticed natural-dye workshop, Bali

Terracotta comes from madder root that spends three years in the ground before it gives its red. We chop and simmer it slow, then dip again and again until the cotton holds an earthen, fired-clay red.

Brown is walnut hull, gathered after it falls in autumn — it needs no mordant, binding its colour on its own. Black is logwood heartwood shifted with a touch of iron until grey becomes a soft, dimensional black.

And our natural pieces are simply undyed GOTS organic cotton — the quiet ecru of the boll. Because every batch is dipped by hand, no two pieces land on exactly the same shade.
